The bvitg e.V. (Federal Association for Healthcare IT) is the leading advocacy group for IT providers in the German healthcare sector. The association serves as the voice of the healthcare IT industry and is committed to advancing digitalization in the sector in a practical and effective manner.

The association unites companies that develop IT solutions for hospitals, medical practices, pharmacies, long-term care facilities, and patients.

The role of bvitg at the DMEA

One of the association’s best-known initiatives is the DMEA (formerly conhIT).
DMEA is a central platform where the industry presents its latest innovations and networks with decision-makers from politics and the healthcare sector.
bvitg is the conceptual sponsor and initiator of this event, which has developed into Europe’s leading event for digital health. In cooperation with Messe München, the bvitg also organizes the DMEA.

What is the bvitg (Federal Association of Healthcare IT, e. V.)?

The bvitg e. V. (Federal Association for Health IT) is the leading advocacy group for IT providers in the German healthcare sector. It serves as the voice of the health IT industry and is committed to actively advancing digitalization in Germany's healthcare sector and ensuring it is practical and effective.

The association represents the interests of companies that develop IT solutions for hospitals, medical practices, pharmacies, long-term care facilities, and patients.

Goals and Core Tasks

At its core, the bvitg’s work revolves around the intersection of technology, medicine, and politics. Its most important tasks include:

  • Advocacy: The bvitg is a representative body that acts as a liaison between its member companies and various stakeholders in the healthcare sector, including policymakers (e.g., the Federal Ministry of Health), self-governing bodies, and institutions such as gematik.
  • Shaping Digital Transformation: The association contributes the technical and practical expertise of IT manufacturers to legislative and regulatory processes.
  • Promoting interoperability: A key priority is the establishment of and adherence to uniform IT standards so that systems from different manufacturers in the healthcare sector can exchange data securely and seamlessly.
  • Knowledge transfer and networking: The association promotes dialogue between manufacturers, professional users (doctors, nurses), academia, and policymakers.

Who does the bvitg represent?

The members of the bvitg cover the entire spectrum of healthcare IT. This includes, among others, providers of:

  • Hospital information systems (HIS)
  • Practice management systems (PMS) for private practitioners
  • IT solutions for nursing and rehabilitation facilities
  • Digital health applications (DiGA / “prescription apps”)
  • telemedicine platforms and archiving systems
  • IT security and data protection solutions

How does the association operate?

The bvitg’s substantive work takes place primarily in topic-specific working and project groups (AGs/PGs). In these forums, experts from member companies come together on a volunteer basis to develop joint positions. Typical subject areas include:

  • Telematics infrastructure (TI)
  • Data protection and information security
  • Digital nursing
  • Artificial intelligence in medicine
  • Interoperability and standards (such as HL7 or FHIR)

These working groups produce position papers, guidelines, and statements on current legislative proposals, which the association contributes to the political discourse.
