AI, TI, EPR and beyond – the programme of DMEA 2024

The congress programme of DMEA 2024 has been announced – from 9 to 11 April 2024 speakers from Germany and Europe will present their visions and best practices for the digital transformation of the healthcare system. Among those taking part are Federal Minister of Health Prof. Dr. Karl Lauterbach, Federal Minister of Education and Research Bettina Stark-Watzinger, David Novillo Ortiz of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Päivi Sillanaukee, Finnish Special Envoy for Health and Wellbeing, the astronaut Dr. Suzanna Randall, the publicist Sascha Lobo, as well as Dr. Sibylle Steiner of the Kassenärztliche Bundesvereinigung (KBV).

In early April on the Berlin Exhibition Grounds the focus will be on the digital transformation of the healthcare system – digital health experts from Germany and around the world will gather at DMEA with their ideas and solutions in order to give digitalisation in healthcare a decisive boost. The wide-ranging congress programme on all three days of the event will place the spotlight on important digital health topics. They include AI in medicine, secure data access, systems networking and interoperability, as well doctors, hospitals and nursing care.

10.15 a.m., _Box1, Hall 4.2: Framework conditions for AI in Medicine

AI opens up a wide range of possibilities in medicine. Speakers include Dr. Jonas Marcello of Frauenhofer IESE on the opportunities and challenges that AI in medicine offers.

11.15 a.m., _Arena, Hall 6.2: Congress: Telemedical treatment and care models

Dr. Maame Yaa Yiadom of Stanford University, Prof. Dr. Sang-il Kim of Berner Fachhochschule, Prof. Dr. Gernot Marx of Universitätsklinikum Aachen, and Dr. Severin Pöchtrager of Klinik Arlesheim present telemedical solutions and their incorporation into both new and existing filing and documentation systems.

1.10 p.m., _Arena, Hall 6.2: Keynote speech, Federal Minister of Health Prof. Dr. Karl Lauterbach

As in previous years, Federal Minister of Health Lauterbach will hold a keynote speech on day one of DMEA. Last year at DMEA, he outlined a concrete timetable for digitalising the healthcare system. Since then, digital laws have been enacted.

3.00 p.m., _Box2, Hall 6.2: The Future Clinic: A journey to the world of limitless healthcare

What would healthcare look like without any limits? That is the question the “Hashtag Gesundheit“ network examines at this session, while looking at various aspects such as the economy, medicine, diversity, IT and nursing care.

3.25 p.m., _Arena, Hall 6.2: eHealth Hot Seat 2024

Quick questions and quick answers – that is the concept of the eHealth Hot Seat at DMEA. This year Dr. Sibylle Steiner, member of the board of the Kassenärztliche Bundesvereinigung, responds to questions from professionals and the audience. She has only a minute to reply to each question.

10.15 – 11.00 a.m., _Box 1, Hall 4.2: Interop as the central strategy of digitalisation – And nothing arrives in healthcare!?

What is needed in order for all health IT components to interact in a meaningful way? – That is just one of the issues surrounding interoperability that Thomas Süptitz of the Federal Ministry of Health and André Sander, CTO of ID GmbH & Co. KGaA examine at this session.

11.15 a.m., _Room Ulm, Hall 2.2: New ways of providing care in rural areas

The Cluster Gesundheitswirtschaft Berlin Brandenburg – HealthCapital addresses the future of medical care in rural areas and asks whether telemedicine is the solution.

1.15 p.m., _Box2, Hall 6.2: DMEA Newcomer Award

Every year, the DMEA Newcomer Award honours the best Bachelor’s and Master’s degree papers on the subject of digital health. The panel of experts is particularly interested in papers which formulate a practical approach to using IT for long-term improvements in healthcare.

2.15 – 3.00 p.m., Hub 1, Hall 1.2: Successful telemedicine research in outpatient and inpatient sectors – An exchange of experiences

At this session Dr. Georg Münzenrieder, departmental head at the Bavarian State Ministry of Health, Nursing and Prevention, talks about how telemedicine can be organised for regional healthcare in Germany in the future.

3.30 p.m., _Stage, Hall 5.2: Back to the future – Two years of the Traffic Light Coalition: Mid-term review and outlook for digital healthcare

Together with Matthias Mieves, member of the German Bundestag, and Jens Naumann, managing director of medatixx and member of the board of bvitg, the discussion examines which projects the governing Traffic Light coalition has taken on and what needs to be achieved by the end of this legislature.

3.30 p.m., _Box2, Hall 6.2: _DMEA sparks: How Gen Z is changing the healthcare system

Medical journalist Frederike Gramm and digital health expert Inga Bergen talk about Gen Z’s expectations with regard to healthcare and the role of social media in that context.

11.15 a.m., _Stage, Hall 5.2: Congress: Digital strategy in hospitals – What comes next after KHZG?

Dr. Stefan Schwarz of Universitätsklinikum Münster, Jörg Redmann of Sanovis GmbH, as well as Thomas Koschmieder and Gudrun Liß of Asklepios Service IT GmbH talk about concepts and examples of possible future strategical approaches to the digital transformation in hospitals.

11.15 a.m., _Box1, Hall 4.2: DMEA nova Award – Final pitches and award ceremony

This is the first time the DMEA nova Award is being presented at the event. The award honours an outstanding idea or solution from a digital health startup. The 20 best startups will deliver their pitches in front of the audience on all three days of DMEA. At the award ceremony, the startup with the most convincing idea or solution will receive 2,500 euros in prize money.

1.00 p.m., _Stage, Hall 5.2: Congress: Connected Health – Networked medical technology for the future of healthcare

Dr. Roswitha Gostner of Carl Zeiss Digital Innovation GmbH, Hans Wenner of VDE, Lena Hagel of the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Engineering, and Prof. Dr. Thomas Neumuth of Universität Leipzig talk about the importance of networked medical products and examine key issues surrounding data security, IT security and data protection.

1.15 p.m., _Box2, Hall 6.2: Women in Digital Health

Almost 1,000 digital health experts have formed the SheHealth network. They look at healthcare for women and highlight the areas where care is lacking and the situation is unclear.


Stakeholder programme – placing digital health topics in a European context

Throughout the event, Germany Trade & Invest (GTAI), the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM), the Ministry of Health, the Danish Embassy, the Digital Hub Initiative, KI Bundesverband e. V., to name only a few participants, will present topics of international interest including the European Health Data Space (EDHS), the Health Research Data Centre, AI and the legal aspects governing genome sequencing. The sessions are organised and held by stakeholders in bvitg e.V.

Guided tours and Solutions Hub – learning from practical experience

Various formats with DMEA exhibitors presenting their solutions and products for the future of digital healthcare will be held on all three days of the event. Trade visitors can take part in the guided tours free of charge. Topics focused on will include data protection, data security in the context of FHIR, cloud computing in the healthcare system, digitalisation in nursing and AI. Trade visitors can find out about products and software solutions on the hub displays of the Solutions Hubs on all three days of DMEA. Exhibitors will hold brief presentations introducing themselves and their products. Information on the Solutions Hub is available here.

About DMEA

DMEA is Europe's leading event for digital health, which gathers decision-makers from all areas of the healthcare sector, including IT specialists, physicians, hospital and nursing care executives as well as experts from politics, science and research.

In 2023 around 16,200 attendees gathered on the Berlin Exhibition Grounds, including 735 exhibitors from Germany and abroad and over 300 speakers.

In 2022, following two years of virtual events due to the pandemic, DMEA was able to take place once again as an in-person event on the Berlin Exhibition Grounds. Over 11,000 attendees, more than 500 exhibitors as well as 300 speakers from Germany and around the world took part in the event.

The DMEA is organized by the Bundesverband Gesundheits-IT - bvitg e.V. (Federal Association for Health IT) and is hosted by Messe Berlin GmbH. It is organized in cooperation with the industry associations GMDS (German Society for Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology) e.V., BVMI (Professional Association of Medical Informatics) e.V. and with the content-related participation of KH-IT (Federal Association of Hospital IT Managers) e.V. and CIO-UK (Chief Information Officers - University Hospitals).
